Episode Seven-Lifestyle Medicine with Dr. Melissa Sundermann
We'd love to hear from you about this episode.
We are going to tell you something that you already know.
Our lives are made up of many different parts and each of us is quite different. It just stands to reason that the way we approach our overall health should be just as unique.
Our modern healthcare system can sometimes get labeled as impersonal, quick to rely on pharmaceutical treatments, and a bit “cookie cutter.”
Enter the growing area of the healthcare world called Lifestyle Medicine, which is proving to be an elemental route to better health and well-being. This medical specialty emphasizes behavioral changes as a primary treatment for disease. It is often referred to as “whole-person care,” organizing behavior modifications into six pillars, including: a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections. This model is designed to provide effective prevention of chronic negative lifestyle conditions.
If you are human, like us, you could benefit from attention in at least one (or all) of those areas.
Welcome to Episode Seven of The Nature of Wellness Podcast.
On today’s episode, we sat down with Dr. Melissa Sundermann, a plant-based physician who has been practicing medicine for over 20 years. She is double-board certified in both Internal Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, and has completed professional training in Mind-Body Medicine through the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC.
She has been featured in multiple Lifestyle Medicine articles and podcasts as well as being an invited speaker for several health/medical national conferences.
Dr. Sundermann strongly believes in fostering a partnership with her patients and helping to guide them towards a healing pathway through self-care. She utilizes the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine, while adding a seventh-daily exposure to nature and fresh air (WE LOVE THIS).
She recently joined the staff of Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort in Lenox, MA as their Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She does her best to practice what she preaches and enjoys running, biking, hiking, skiing and spending time outdoors and creating adventures with her family.
If your New Year's goal was to be healthier, then this episode is JUST what the Doctor ordered.
